Monday Morning Golf Report: 2/27/12

Hunter Mahan (6) defeated Rory Mcllroy (1) 2 and 1 to win the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, AZ.  Mahan won his second career WGC Championship by shooting 35 birdies in 96 holes and 6 rounds played and putting away most of his opponents rather quickly.  he withstood a late charge by Mcllory who was trying to secure himself the world #1 ranking with a win but it was not happening against Mahan this weekend.  Mahan played great golf all week and won the first WGC Championship by an American since Tiger won in 2008.  The victory won Mahan $1.4 mil and moved him into the top 10 in the world golf rankings.

Interesting note:  During Mcllroy and Westwood’s morning quarter-final match, Westwood’s drive on 12 hit a women in the back and landed inside of her shirt.  Westwood’s caddie Billie Foster kindly asked her if she wouldn’t mind moving about 250 yards closer to the hole but she declined.

21-year-old John Huh defeated Robert Allenby on the 8th playoff hole of the Mayakoba Golf Classic to earn his first PGA Tour win in just his 5 career start.  The 8 hole playoff was the longest in the PGA since 1983.  Huh pared all 8 holes to defeat Allenby who held a 2 shot lead on the 18th hole but a double-bogey dropped him into a playoff with Huh.
