Monday Morning Golf Report: Transitions Championship 3/19/12

Before I get into the PGA I want to comment on Columbia’s best 4-man Captain’s Choice team.  Daniel, John, Hop and I went out and shot a 10-under for the kids of St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  We bombed some drives, hit a long eagle put and made some birdies all for the kids.  But we also hit some trees, missed some puts, had to play a ball out of a sand trap and had the ranger stop us from playing the wrong #6 hole.  Also all for the kids.  Good times.

Rory Mcllroy’s stay as the #1 golfer in the world was short-lived.  That’s because Luke Donald just took it back.  Luke Donald shot a 5-under 66 final round to rally from a 3 shot deficit to join a 4 man playoff with Jim Furyk, Robert Garrigus and Bae Sang-Moon.  It only to Donald one playoff hole to dispatch his challengers and claim the world #1 ranking in the process.

In a tournament that saw 8 golfers lead on the final round the saddest story might be of Ernie Els.  Holding a lead going into the final stretch Els missed a short birdie put late and missed a short par put on 18 that would have put him in the playoff.  The 3 time major winner is in danger of missing next month’s first major of the season, the Masters if he more than likely doesn’t get a win in the next 2 weeks.  If Els doesn’t make the Masters it will the first one he will have missed since 1993 and a Masters without the Big Easy is something no one wants to see.

Speaking of the Masters, everybody is wanting to know if Tiger will be able to play after injuring his Achilles last week.  Let me assure you that Tiger will play at the Masters and he will play well.  Augusta National is set up for him and he will be in contention.

Next Week:

Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard

Bay Hill Course
Orlando, Florida

2011 Winner: Martin Laird
