The NFL suspends Saints head coach Sean Payton for one year without pay, former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely and the team is fined $500,000 for their roles in a bounty program they ran over the last 3 seasons.
Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis will be suspended for 8 games and linebacker coach Joe Vitt will be suspended 6 games. The Saints will also lose their 2nd round draft picks from 2012 and 2013. What happens now?
1. The Saints need to get Drew Brees signed and under a long-term contract. Right now Brees holds all the cards in the negotiations. The Saints can’t afford to not lock Bress up and make him the highest paid player in the league.
2. Who coaches? New DC Steve Spaguolo and OC Pete Carmichael are the leading candidates but I think that rather than making them take on the HC duties they let OL coach Aaron Kromer take the reins for this season. He has experience and would allow the Saints coaching staff to stay pretty consistent.
3. Are there going to be players suspended? I say no but I could be wrong. The league came down so hard on the coaches and organization that I think they are taking the majority of the hit. Could I be wrong? Yes.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
If you are wondering how I feel about these suspensions as a Saints fan well I will tell you. They don’t bother me. What the Saints did the last 3 years was pretty bad. If they were trying to injure players and end careers then they deserve all the punishment they got. Do I wish my Saints had all their coaches and drafts picks? Yes. Do I think the penalty is unfair or too much? Not at all.
