The Morning Dump: 4/30/12

After a long 4-day-weekend filled with moving the family back to NC and catching up with some friends, I am putting the Dump together from my Columbia hotel room.

The Clippers celebrating their big comeback. (Mike Brown / EPA)

Big comeback by the Clippers in Memphis last night after being down 27 in the 3rd.  This was the 1st Rd series I was most excited to watch and it lived up to its hype.  Can the Grizz recover from this?  I hope so.

I am predicting a 2 game ban for Rondo for his chest bump on an official.  Without him and Ray Allen the Celts are done.

A Nike shoe designer blames Derrick Rose’s choice of Adidas for his torn ACL.  I hope that’s not the reason because Lionel Messi and my girl Katy Perry are rocking Adidas. Continue reading

NBA Playoff Preview

We made it through the lockout shortened, condensed 66 game regular season. Getting here wasn’t pretty, and while I enjoyed the Christmas Day start trying to cram all of those games in was a bad idea. We saw a ton of injuries, sloppy basketball, and teams resting their stars often. But that’s all over now, it’s playoff time. Let’s check out the first round matchups and make some predictions.

NASCAR Primer: Richmond

We’re back to a short track this week after two trips to intermediate tracks. Richmond should provide us, as I talked about earlier this week, with some much needed action via bumping, banging, accidents and caution flags. Give it a click for news on Bristol, a Nationwide newcomer and what to watch for at Richmond… Continue reading

2012 NFL Draft 1st Round Instant Grades

1. Colts, Andrew Luck: A+

Good bye Peyton Manning and hello Andrew Luck.  The Colts make the only pick they could make and get themselves a franchise QB that they hope is as good as the last QB they drafted #1.

2. Redskins, Robert Griffin III: A+

With their last 1st round pick of this decade, the Skins get their franchise QB.  RG3 could become the best QB in this draft with his upside and will revive the Skins.

3. Browns, Trent Richardson: A

Running backs this early in the league now is very risky but Richardson is a beast.  The trade with Minnesota for 1 spot was not that big a deal if he is who they really wanted and they thought he would be gone.

4. Vikings, Matt Kalil: B

Solid pick for the Vikings but Claiborne would have helped  them much more in the pass happy NFC North

5. Jaguars, Justin Blackmon: A

Getting Blackmon for a 4th round pick is very good for Jax.  Gabbert will enjoy having him and Blackmon will be solid.  I just hope Jax will use him right.  He moves down the fantasy rookie rankings with this pick. Continue reading

The Morning Dump: 4/26/12

The 2012 NFL Draft, the most important non-sporting event in sports is tonight and The Sports Dump is ready to cover it pick by pick.  No more Mocks just Drafts.

I think there will be at least 5 trades in the 1st round tonight.  With the new rookie pay scale the teams are not afraid to make moves and go get the guy they want.

Brandon Weeden, the best QB in this draft will most likely fall to the 2nd round because of his age.  Bad choice.  He will be a Pro-Bowl level QB and if you draft him your QB spot will be elite until 2020 at least. Continue reading

The Sports Dump Official 2012 NFL Draft Battle

Welcome, folks to the moment you’ve all been waiting for!!  The Sports Dump crew is competing to determine who will be crowned the Official Sports Dump NFL Draft Guru!  Each member of the crew has submitted their picks.

I spent all my free time not posting this week to create the most accurate 2011 Mock NFL Draft to date!  Unfortunately my 2012 NFL picks are not nearly as accurate.  As for the rest of the crew:  Jumbo managed to scrawl his picks out in crayon on a Bojangles napkin, Greg took some time off from facebook stalking German Olympians to make his picks,  Phil has Kevin Harvick going number eight overall to Miami and Richard even consulted WalterFootball to complete his picks once he got sick of doing ANOTHER mock draft.   According to Mickey Loomis’ wiretaps, the conversation went something like this:
