Monday Morning Golf Report: Houston Open 4/2/12

Hunter Mahan (Getty Images)

In the last tournament before the Masters, Hunter Mahan became the first 2-time winner on the PGA Tour this year.  Mahan finished 16-under par to hold off Carl Pettersson by one stroke.  It was Mahan’s 5th career victory and has him sitting pretty as the number 4 ranked player in the world.  This win has to have Mahan feeling confident going into the Masters.

Former Masters winners Phil Mickelson and Louis Oosthuizen both finished well and should also be feeling confident going into an Augusta layout they have won on before.  I expect both to play well this week.

Ernie Els played well at 10-under but that was not enough to get he win and a Masters invite.  It will be the first Masters since 93 without Els and he will be missed.

I.K. Kim (AP)

I am not going to spend much time on the LPGA but I.K. Kim missed a 1 foot putt for the win on the 18th hole of the Kraft-Nabisco Championship.  Kim lost in the first playoff hole after not being able to recover from the miss.

Next Week’s Tournament:  The Masters

I will be doing a full Masters preview on Wednesday so check back for that.
