Jumbo’s NHL Playoff Preview.

Jumbo is growing his playoff beard.

Ladies, don’t get too mad at your man’s scruffy look this spring because he can’t help it.  It’s his playoff beard.  The best postseason in sports is getting started this Wednesday and I can’t wait.  I don’t have to sell playoff hockey to real hockey fans but it’s the non hardcore hockey fan that might need a little convincing.

Top 3 Reasons Playoff Hockey Is The Best Postseason

1.  Intensity

2.  Sudden Death OT

3.  Intensity

If you give playoff hockey a fair shake and try to watch it, I swear you will be hooked for life.  Now on to the preview.

Eastern Conference

Ottawa Senators (Wayne Cuddington/Postmedia News)

#1 New York Rangers vs. #8 Ottawa Senators

The Rangers come into the playoffs as the #1 seed in the East but their lack of scoring will make them vulnerable to an upset at the hands of Ottawa.  Even though the Rangers D and power plays are a strong point I am going to go with a 6 game Senators upset.

#2 Boston Bruins vs. #7 Washington Capitals

The reigning Stanley Cup Champs start their title defense against the hot at the right time Capitals but the Bruins have the playoff experience to cool a hot team down.  Bruins in 5 games.

#3 Florida Panthers vs. #6 New Jersey Devils

The Panthers limped in to the playoffs and the Devil are the favorite in this series no matter what the seeding says.  And in a bit of sweet revenge, Devils coach Peter DeBoer gets to knock the team that fired him last year out of the playoffs.  Devils in 4 games.

Pens and Flyers Playing the FEUD

#4 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. #5 Philadelphia Flyers

Alright non hardcore hockey fans, this is the series for you.  This will be tight and these 2 teams hate each other.  You will see physical hockey and there will be some blood on the ice.  Even though the Flyers have owned the Penguins this season, i am going with the scorers of Pittsburgh to win a tight 7 game series.

Western Conference

#1 Vancouver Canucks vs. #8 Los Angeles Kings

The Canucks have the best record in the NHL and are still very hungry from their riot causing loss last year in the Stanley Cup Finals (note to UK: You are supposed to riot when you lose not when you win).  I don’t see the Kings having a chance unless Quick can dominate this series from the net and steal one.  Canucks in 5 games.

The same thing happend during the UK riot but they were brother and sister so no one showed it.

#2 St. Louis Blues vs. #7 San Jose Sharks

The Blues are playing great and have beaten the Sharks all 4 times they played this season.  I don’t see the Sharks being able to give the Blues much of a matchup so I am going with a sweep for the Blues.

#3 Phoenix Coyotes vs. #6 Chicago Blackhawks

Since the beginning of Feb the Coyotes have gone 20-6-5 and are playing very good now but the Blackhawks have the playoff experience to upset the Coyotes.  The team is pretty much unchanged since their title in 2010 and will win a tough 7 game series.

Detroit Red Wings (Paul Sancya / AP)

#4 Nashville Predators vs. #5 Detroit Red Wings

I will never be able to pick a hockey team out of Tennessee over the Detroit Red Wings so I am going Red Wings in 6 games.

  1. I’m gonna root for whoever wins the Preds/Wings series…

    • Nashville has a chance but I just can’t pick em. I think I like Vancouver for the Stanley Cup.

      • I like the way Nashville plays but yes Vancouver is going to be tough to beat. I’m thinking the Rangers get there and hopefully lose to further crush their fans…

      • I don’t think the Rangers can score enough to make a run.

      • Defense and Goaltending are more important in the playoffs.. the game changes. Lundqvist is their key to a run…

      • The Rangers will be golfing in May.

  2. That picture of you is terrifying.

  3. I agree with Charlie, the Rangers will not be balanced enough to make it through. Riding a goaltender to a Stanley Cup is not the way the league is structured nowadays, although Lundqvist is the best in the NHL. However, Ottawa is not built well enough on the backend and will not be able to handle the Rangers forecheck. Rangers in 5.

I am looking at San Jose to pull the upset. With a possible rotating goalie situation in St. Louis (will it be Halak or an injured Elliott) and a healthy Havlat for San Jose it could be the perfect storm. I am looking at San Jose in 6.

    Enjoying the hockey talk!

    • I would love nothing more than to see the Rangers lose so I’m hoping Lundqvist’s goaltending is not the answer! I know the league is different now with rule changes after the lockout and teams have adapted rosters for a faster style of play. In the Playoffs though.. you’ll see it slow down somewhere in the middle of old hockey and the new NHL. This is why goaltending becomes that much more important.

I’m also interested to see that will happen in St. Louis with a rotating goalie situation as well in a couple other spots. How will that benefit (or sink) one of the contenders?
