2012 U.S. Open Day 1 Breakdown and Day 2 Preview

Can Michael Thompson hold the lead?

Day 1 is in the books and Michael Thompson is the leader at -4 but Tiger woods leads a 5 man group that includes 3 former major winners at -1.  Can Thompson hold on to his lead in day 2?  Not a chance.

Quick Thoughts

Tiger Woods shot a -1 69 and could have shot a -5 65.  He looked great.  The only thing that I noticed was his distance control on his short irons.  When he needed 100 yards he got 115 yards.  I know he worked on that afterwards.

Luke Donald and Andy Zhang both shot a +9 79.  One is the #1 golfer in the world and the other is a 14-year-old kid.

WOW! This 14-year-old is good.

The top 3 golfers (Donald, Mcllroy, Westwood) in the world shot a combined +19 over yesterday.

My pick to win, Jason Day shot a +5 75.  Sorry about the curse Jason.

Nick Watney hit a double-eagle on #17 to make it 2 straight majors that we have seen the elusive albatross.

Lefty and Bubba got rolled yesterday and looked bad.

What to look for on day 2

Can Tiger make a big move?  If he plays like yesterday but controls his short irons he will start to roll.

Justin Rose and Matt Kuchar are just behind him have the talent to get their first major.

Tiger is prowling.

Leader after Day 2 will be…  Tiger Woods -3
