The college football slate is pretty weak this weekend, due to the historic schedule a in-state bum requirement, but we have some decent storylines. We get the leaders of both divisions of the MAC and the PAC12 going head-2-head and a good BIG10 battle.
Last Week: 5-2 (46-50-2, 48%)
Toledo at Northern Illinois (-10) 9pm ESPN2
Toledo (8-2, 5-1 MAC) travels to NIU (9-1, 6-0 MAC) in a battle for the top spot in the MAC-West. NIU QB Jordan Lynch isn’t known by many outside the MAC, but he is on the minds of NFL scouts with his play. This is going to be a MAC shootout and there will be points a plenty. NIU wins, but Toledo keeps it inside of 10 pts.
#25 Kent State at Bowling Green (-2.5) 12pm ESPN
Ranked for the first time in 39 years, Kent State (9-1, 6-0 MAC) heads to Bowling Green (7-3, 5-1 MAC) in a battle for the MAC-East lead. That loss to the dismal Kentucky program is the only blemish on their résumé and the want to win the MAC East, but a trip to BGU win end those hopes. Bowling Green’s D is legit for a MAC team and will get the win.
#21 USC (-4) at #17 UCLA 3pm FOX
The Bruins have lost 11 of the last 13 games to the Trojans, but they are primed for a big win this year. If the Bruins can contain the Trojans passing game and get their running game going, UCLA will win this game. I don’t see it happening this time. Barkley and the USC offense will roll into their matchup with Notre Dame next week.
This will be real BIG10 football, where the team whose defense can contain the other teams run game. The Buckeyes are riding a wasted season and the Badgers have locked up a BIG10 Title game appearance, so pride is the prize here. The Badgers and Montee Ball run on OSU and they get the job done at home.
Utah State (-3) at #19 Louisiana Tech 4pm ESPN3
The battle of the 2 best teams in the WAC will feature one of the best offences in the country in La Tech in one of the most exciting games of the weekend. Utah State is the favorite for their toughness, but I am going with the home dog and the offensive beast that is the Bulldogs.
#14 Stanford at #1 Oregon (-20.5) 8pm ABC
Game of the Weekend: Oregon starts a tough 3 game (Stan, OSU, USC/UCLA) stretch against Stanford this weekend in their chase for a BCS Title Game slot. The Oregon D is facing injuries and they are looking at playing RB/WR/KR/PR De’Anthony Thomas at CB to help. The Ducks have the power to roll, but I think the Cardinals keep it within 20. I am already regretting this pick.
Upset Special: Why do I have a game between to teams with a combined 2-18 record on this post? Because I think this is the game that Southern Miss gets off the snide and gets its first win of the season. 28-17 Southern Miss
