2013 NFL MOCK DRAFT (PRE-COMBINE)

The senior bowls are over and the combine is in just under a month away (Feb. 20-26), but it’s never too early to do a mock draft.  Here is my Pre-Combine Mock Draft and a few thoughts on how I based it.

Luke Joeckel vs. Sam Montgomery (US Presswire)

Luke Joeckel vs. Sam Montgomery (US Presswire)

  • The QB talent pool is weak, but an even weaker Free Agent pool will lead to an early rush on QBs.  Geno Smith goes 1st or 4th, but the status of Alex Smith and Matt Flynn will dictate the other QB needs.
  • Eventhough there is much more talent on the defensive side of the football, the 1st round will be pretty even.
  • Future Hall of Famers either retiring or changing teams will help mold the 1st round.

2013 NFL MOCK DRAFT (PRE-COMBINE)

1

KC

LUKE JOECKEL, OT TEX A&M The Chiefs need a QB bad, but Andy Reid is going to build this team from the line out and Joeckel looks like a Draft+Start+All Pro talent.

2

JAX

BJOERN WERNER, DE FSU Jacksonville can’t rush the passer (among other things) and Werner will help with that.  Mingo and Moore factor here also, but I think they go with Werner.

3

OAK

STAR LOTULELEI, DT UTAH Oakland could go pass rusher, but I think Lotulelei will impress so much he goes in the top 5.

4

PHI

GENO SMITH, QB WVU Geno isn’t a perfect fit for Chip’s offense, but he’s a better fit than Vick or Foles.

5

DET

BARKEVIOUS MINGO, DE LSU Mingo is a beast/freak and will help Detroit from getting their secondary exposed.

6

CLE

DAMONTRE MOORE, DE TEX A&M I think will move out of this spot and draft a CB or WR, but if they stay they take the best player on the board in Moore

7

ARI

MATT BARKLEY, QB USC Barkley didn’t do the Senior Bowl and that helped his draft stock.  All the QBs looked bad and that makes Barkley look good.

8

BUF

MIKE GLENNON, QB NCSU Buffalo needs a QB and panic will make them take Glennon.  He has the body and the tools to succeed, but will Buffalo be able to use them.

9

NYJ

SHELDON RICHARDSON, DT MISSOURI Moves great for a big DT and holds his ground vs. big OL.  Rex Ryan will enjoy his 1 year with Richardson.

10

TEN

JARVIS JONES, OLB GEORGIA The Titans will want Warmack, but they won’t pass on Jones.  My #1 player in this draft.

11

SD

ERIC FISHER, OT CMU San Diego gets the LT they need in Fisher.  LT spot gets locked up for a decade.

12

MIA

KEENAN ALLEN, WR CALIFORNIA Miami needs playmakers and Allen is that.  He will give Tannehill and Brandon Marshall type target.

13

TB

DEE MILLINER, CB ALABAMA Physical corner will fit right in with the Bucs.  Great at coverage and run support.

14

CAR

JOHN JENKINS, DT GEORGIA DT is the most pressing need in Carolina and Jenkins will fit very well.

15

NO

JONATHAN HANKINS, DT OHIO STATE Hankins looks like a perfect 3-4 DT and should free up the Saints young pass rushers.

16

STL

LANE JOHNSON, OT OKLAHOMA The Rams will help the OL in this spot and Warmack is an option, but I think they will go with Johnson and never look back.

17

PIT

EZEKIEL ANSAH, DE BYU The Steelers aging D gets some new life in their pass rush from Ansah.  Elam or Vaccaro may be options as well.

18

DAL

SHARIFF FLOYD, DT FLORIDA With their move to the 4-3 looming, Dallas will need at DT like Floyd.

19

NYG

ZACH ERTZ, TE STANFORD The Giants and the Bears both need new TE targets for their QBs and they get them back-to-back in the 1st round.

20

CHI

TYLER EIFERT, TE NOTRE DAME

21

CIN

SAM MONTGOMERY, DE LSU Not as flashy as Mingo, but Montgomery is a talented pass rusher that will help the Bengals.

22

STL

EDDIE LACY, RB ALABAMA Goodbye Steven Jackson, Hello Eddie Lacy.  Lacy is the kind of RB that Jeff Fisher has wet dreams about.

23

MIN

CORDARRELLE PATTERSON, WR TENNESSEE The Minnesota Peterson’s need some playmakers on offense and Patterson would give them that.

24

IND

DION JORDAN, DE OREGON I don’t think Freeney will be a Colt in 2013, so a rush end is a priority.

25

SEA

DEANDRE HOPKINS, WR CLEMSON The Seattle offense needs a playmaker and that is Hopkins.  Pairing Hopkins with Russell Wilson will be gold.

26

GB

CHANCE WARMACK, OG ALABAMA Warmack is a top-5 talent, but OGs seem to fall.  Green Bay is not complaining.

27

HOU

TERRANCE WILLIAMS, WR BAYLOR WR is the biggest need in Houston, besides a replacement for Schaub.

28

DEN

XAVIER RHODES, CB FSU Would Xavier Rhodes have let Jacoby Jones get behind him in the playoffs?  No.

29

NE

KENNY VACCARO, S TEXAS The best safety on the board would be loved by Belichick, but I don’t think the Pats stay in this spot.

30

ATL

ALEX OKAFOR, DE TEXAS Abraham’s getting old and Okafor would be a great replacement for him.  If one of the top TEs are still on the board, look for that.

31

BAL

MATT ELAM, S FLORIDA Ed Reed will be gone and Matt Elam would fit nicely.  They could go Te’o to replace Lewis as well.

32

SF

JESSE WILLIAMS, DT ALABAMA Justin Smith is falling apart and Williams would give the 49ers another big DT to keep the LBs clean.
