The Sports Dump All-Time 1-on-1 Basketball Challenge Day 4 Results

imagesCA9PGK1K#6 Tim Duncan defeats #11 Patrick Ewing 17-15

I love the Duncan/Ewing matchup and I think it would be a battle. Unfortunately for Ewing, this is an elimination game and we all know that Ewing never performs when the title is on the line. Duncan Wins 15-12

This one really could be a coin flip, but The Big Fundamental has a slight edge in all around skills. Duncan edges Ewing 16-14

I’m gonna have to go Ewing in the first matchup. It really is a coin-flip, but I think Ewing was a bit more explosive in his prime and had the better 17-footer. Plus, his nostrils flaring would psych out just about any opponent. Ewing, 15-13.

Before Lebron showed up, Tim Duncan was the best player since MJ. The game’s greatest PF dominates the overrated Knick. 15-6.

imagesCAQH379U#14 David Robinson defeats #3 Bill Russell 15-12

Russell averaged an amazing 22.5 rebounds per game for his career and that average went up to 25 rpg in the playoffs. That means that when the game is on the line, Russell is at his best. It’s just too bad Russell’s best is going to have trouble with the Admiral’s best. Robinson will overpower Russell in the post and shoots well enough to give Russell trouble 15 feet out. Robinson Wins 15-10

Robinson’s mid range jumper gets him the win. Zero points will be scored at the rim.

Russell was incredibly athletic and long, but people forget what a physical specimen Robinson was. He will muscle The Captain out of the paint with just his arms. And he had some cool shoes.
The Admiral moves on 15-11.

These are two of the most athletic bigs the game has ever seen. I’ll never forget the Admiral scoring 71 in the final game of the season to edge Shaq for the scoring title. That’s the kind of offensive game that’ll take you far in this tourney. Sorry Bill, Robinson takes it 15-12

The Sports Dump All-Time 1-on-1 Basketball Challenge Day 4

imagesCA5428QCThe Sports Dump’s All-Time 1-on-1 Basketball Challenge has now begun.  32 of the game’s all-time greats go head-2-head to find out who is the best 1-on-1 player.  The tournament format is divided into 2 groups of 16 players in a seeded bracket.  The first group is Guards and Wings (PG,SG,SF) and the second group is Bigs (PF,C).  They will play until we have a Guards/Wings vs. Bigs final.  This is not a simple stats comparison, this is a 1-on-1 matchup using the players skills and gifts.  Under each player you will find their size and FG%, plus a rating for their shooting range, defense, strength and creativity.  Scoring will be to 15 points (no make it take it) by 1′s and 2′s.  We have finished out all 8 1st Rd matchups of the “Guards/Wings” and the first 4 matchups of our Bigs Bracket and today we hit the last 4 1st Rd matchups of our “Bigs” and set up our 2nd Rd matchups.  Let’s Get It On!

The Morning Dump: 2/28/13

02-27-2013-stephen-curry2-3_4_r536_c534Stephen Curry dropped 54 points and 11 threes on the Knicks and the Warriors still lost last night.  Fact of the Day:  There are 4 Knicks players who have been in the league since Stephen Curry’s dad, Dell Curry played.

Nationwide driver Jeremy Clements has been suspended indefinitely by NASCAR for comments he made in an interview.  What did he say?

Penn State gets their first Big Ten win of the season with an upset over #4 Michigan last night.  Is Gonzaga really about to be the #1 team in the nation?

The 49ers have agreed to trade Alex Smith to the Chiefs for a couple of 2nds and a mid-round pick 2014 (We Think?).  I think the move is good for both teams and Smith should give the Chiefs a solid steady QB to build with.

imagesCA6J2TW0I can take American’s losing jobs and kids not being able to go to preschool, but don’t you mess with my military flyovers.

David Stern only gave David Lee and Roy Hibbert a 1-game suspension for their fracas on Tuesday night.  Is it me or is Stern just cruising to his retirement?

The Sports Dump All-Time 1-on-1 Basketball Challenge Day 3 Results

imagesCAK3MPJJ#6 Oscar Robertson defeats #11 Allen Iverson 15-10

#6 Oscar Robertson vs. #11 Allen Iverson: I love Iverson’s game and his ability to fight his way through a bowling alley, but the Robertson in his prime beats him 10 of 10. I really wish A.I. would have drawn a better 1st Rd matchup and made it to the 2nd Rd, but he gets rolled. Oscar Wins 15-6

Iverson-  speed kills and the killer crossover

No one is voting for AI in this one. Oscar certainly has many of the advantages in this matchup but let’s not forget that AI pretty much defined “hero ball” and that is exactly what 1-on-1 is. AI takes a close one after crossing up Oscar Robertson over and over.

Iverson was electric in his prime, and he’ll give the Big O a game, but no way he can pull the upset. Oscar wins 15-11.

This would be a fun matchup to watch, but I think AIs’ low field goal percentage holds him back. The Big O takes it 15-12. BTW he finishes with 15 points 12 rebounds 10 steals…what did you expect?

imagesCAD6DFNL#3 Lebron James defeats #14 Rick Barry 15-4

#3 Lebron James vs. #14 Rick Barry: The story is that Michael Spinks was crying in fear in the locker room before his fight with Mike Tyson and I think that Rick Barry would be having the same pre-game reaction to his matchup with Lebron. Rick Barry would have nothing for Lebron and Lebron crushes him. Lebron Wins 9-0 as Barry walks off the court and swears to never pick up a basketball again.

Lebron vs. Barry!  Really??????

Hate to see AI go down in the first and Jerry West advance…

You know how this one goes. Will LeBron let him score at all?

I could have seen this as the only shut out thus far, but Rick did average over 35 points per game in his second season. That being said, he still can’t hang with King James. LBJ takes it 15-6 Continue reading

The Morning Dump: 2/27/13

imagesMinnesota beat the #1 Hoosiers last night, making that the 7th time the #1 ranked team has lost this season.

Get ready for a monster season from Bryce Harper and the Nationals.  They are my World Series pick and he is about to be my prediction for N.L. MVP.

Real Madrid beat Barca 3-1 yesterday on the leg of Christiano Ronaldo’s 2 goals.  Barca has dropped 2 straight matches and are looking pedestrian at the wrong time of the season.  I think they are really missing coach Tito Vilanova.

Tyrann Mathieu had a strong combine showing and will be causing havoc for someone as a 3rd round pick.

imagesCAEO5ZGKRussia’s Sagid Murtazaliev has joined Bulgaria’s Valentin Yordanov and returned his wrestling gold medal to the IOC in protest of wrestling being dropped from the Olympics in 2020.  Will any U.S. wrestlers join the protest?

Former UT strength and conditioning coach, Troy Willis was arrested for breaking into the basketball offices and vandalizing them.

David Stern is going to drop the hammer on the Pacer and Warrior players involved in this.

The Sports Dump All-Time 1-on-1 Basketball Challenge Day 2 Results

The second day of The Sports Dump All-Time 1-on-1 Basketball Challenge is in the books and here are the results and some of the comments.

imagesCAZKADCS#1 Wilt Chamberlain defeats #16 Kevin McHale

First matchup is #1 seed Wilt the Stilt vs #16 seed Kevin McHale. This will probably be closer than the seeding suggests but I’m thinking Wilt’s Defense wi…ns this matchup. Side note: I’ve never thought about two 6’10” + guys playing 1-on-1 before. Actually pretty hilarious.
McHale will play Wilt tough and give him some serious hell in the post, but Wilt will be able to win in the end.  Wilt Wins 15-9

Chamberlain-  He can score on and off the court!

Odds are, Wilt probably slept with Kevin McHale’s wife. This game makes yesterday’s MJ/Pip contest look like two hand tag.

Wilt may seem like the clear favorite, but I’ve never seen him shoot outside of 5 feet.  If his career 50% free throws are any indication, it think he’s toast when runs up against someone he can’t back down…however, McHale just isn’t that guy.  I bet it’s closer than most would think, but Wilt prevails 15-10

images#8 Charles Barkley defeats #9 Elvin Hayes

His defeat of Hayes would be “turrible”.

Barkley is a good shooter and is ultimately just too strong for Elvin Hayes. Despite his height disadvantage, Barkley beats Hayes up for the win.

Elvin Hayes was stuck behind Russell and Wilt for most of his career, but he is a beast in the post.  Barkley was undersized for his position, but was never once outworked and he would not let Hayes beat him today.  Barkley Wins 15-12 Continue reading
