The Sports Dump All-Time 1-on-1 Basketball Challenge

imagesThe event of the century is finally here.  The Sports Dump’s All-Time 1-on-1 Basketball Challenge has now begun.  32 of the game’s all-time greats go head-2-head to find out who is the best 1-on-1 player.  The tournament format is divided into 2 groups of 16 players in a seeded bracket.  The first group is Guards and Wings (PG,SG,SF) and the second group is Bigs (PF,C).  They will play until we have a Guards/Wings vs. Bigs final.  This is not a simple stats comparison, this is a 1-on-1 matchup using the players skills and gifts.  Under each player you will find their size and FG%, plus a rating for their shooting range, defense, strength and creativity.  Scoring will be to 15 points (no make it take it) by 1’s and 2’s.  Let’s Get It On!

Scottie Pippen gets the matchup we all know he wants and gets to kick off our 1-on-1 Challenge with teammate Michael Jordan.  Will Pippen be able to use his size and length as an advantage or will Jordan’s game be too much for Pippen.

imagesCADXZCB3The only matchup of 2 current NBA players in the first round gives us Kobe and Durant.  Both can drop shots from all over the court, but Kobe’s ability to play man-up defense may be the key.

Celtic royalty goes head-2-head in our last matchup of the day.  Look for Bird to live and die by the jump shot and for Havlicek to try to pester him with tight D.

Tonight we will post the results and tomorrow morning at 9am we will do our next batch of matchups.

  1. My picks:

    Jordan
    West
    Bryant
    Bird

My question though is, how is John Stockton even on this list let alone ranked higher than Pippen and Durant? Look, in my opinion he’s the greatest pure point guard ever. He’s the all time steals leader and his assist record is untouchable, but I’m pretty sure you don’t pass in one on one (I’m not 100% on that though…the idea of passing at all is foreign to me). He only scored 30+ ten times in his eighteen year career. 7 vs 10 better not be Dell Curry vs Cedric Ceballos!

  2. Stockton is on the list because he IS one the best guards to ever play the game and we used that to set up the seeds for the tourney format. I agree that Stockton was not a scorer in the NBA, but he rarely had to. He avg 20 points in college and had a higher career 3-point % than anyone else in the tourney (even Bird) and is ranked in the top 10 in “True Shooting %” (http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/ts_pct_career.html) all-time. Do I think Stockton has a chance to win this thing? No! I just think your blind hatred of Utah clouds your judgment. Don’t worry about the 7 vs. 10 matchup, Isiah Thomas vs. Dr. J should be a good one.
I agree with your Jordan, Bryant and Bird picks.
