NCAA 2nd Round Preview and Picks 3/23/13

images#5 VCU vs. #4 Michigan 12:15pm CBS

VCU pressure vs. Michigan tempo.  The Rams are going to try to force the Wolverines into turnovers, but the Wolverines are the nations best at not turning it over.  This will be the game of the day and Michigan’s guard play will prevail.

#6 Memphis vs. #3 MSU 2:45pm CBS

I’m a fan of Joe Jackson and Memphis, but they are in trouble vs. the Spartans.  I have never bet against MSU when a Sweet 16 spot is on the horizon and I won’t start today.  Izzo and the Spartans move on.

#8 Colorado St. vs. #1 Louisville 5:15pm CBS

A #1 seed will fall today, but it won’t be the Cardinals.  Senior heavy teams can pull tourney upsets and the Rams can rebound with anyone, but the talent level isn’t there.  Cards win.

Azizona#14 Harvard vs. #6 Arizona 6:10pm TNT

I saw the Harvard upset coming, but the run ends here. (Tip for next season: Harvard will make an Elite 8 run)  The Wildcats are my Final 4 pick in the West and their athletes will be able to control Harvard’s small lineup.

#12 Oregon vs. #4 St. Louis 7:10pm TBS

Both of these teams should have been seeded better and the nation knows that.  Oregon is the BEST team from the PAC12 and will give the Billikens hell.  This St. Louis team is playing for their late coach (Majerus) and is one of the best defensive teams in the nation.  Toughness and defense will carry St. Louis to the Sweet 16.

#6 Butler vs. #3 Marquette 7:45pm CBS

There are two men that I don’t bet against in March, Tom Izzo and Brad Stevens.  Stevens’ Bulldogs are going to play tough and outwork any team they face.  Marquette survived vs. Davidson, but will fall to Butler.

WSU#9 Wichita St. vs. #1 Gonzaga 8:40pm TNT

The Zags were tested by a solid Southern on Thursday and they will have trouble with the Shockers.  The Shockers are a tough team that will not let the #1 Zags intimidate them.  This game will be close and I think the Shockers pull the upset.

#12 California vs. #4 Syracuse 9:40pm TBS

Cal will have serious trouble with the long wing defenders of the Orange and Syracuse’s 2-3 zone will shut it down.  The Orangemen are the best defensive team in the country and will move on to face Indiana in the next round.
