2013 TSD College Football Primer Week 1

It’s been over 200 days since we watched Alabama destroy Notre Dame for the BCS Championship and claim it’s 3rd title in 4 years.  The SEC will continue their dominance over the football world, but the up and coming PAC12 may have something to say come title time.  Until then, let’s just enjoy the greatest season in sports.

Thursday

North Carolina at #6 South Carolina -11.5 6pm ESPNclowney3s-1-web

I think the Heels are a legitimate contender for the ACC title, but this is SEC football tonight.  Renner has the talent to be an elite college QB and he can shine if James Hurst and crew can keep the USC D-Line from putting him on his back.  This is a big game for both teams, but USC may get caught looking to Georgia next week.  I’m taking Heels to cover with a Gamecock win.

Mississippi -3 at Vanderbilt 9:15pm ESPN

Soon-to-be major program coach, James Franklin has taken Vandy to 2 straight bowls and should be hitting his 3rd this season.  Ole Miss’ coach Hugh Freeze hopes his top recruiting class can play spoiler in the SEC West and carry the Rebels to a bowl.  They’re journeys start tonight in Vandy.  This game will be about the Rebel WRs vs. the SECs best secondary.  If they get separation, the Rebels win.  They won’t.  Vandy by a TD.

Saturday

Rice at #7 Texas A&M -26.5 1pm ESPN

Can Rice cover the 26.5 points with Johnny Football on the pine for the 1st half?  Nope!

#1 Alabama -19.5 at VT 5:30pm ESPNBama

This game will show the separation of the ACC and the SEC.  Bama hits the road to face an ACC title contender and they are near 20 point favorites.  I tend to ride dbl-digit home dogs, but not vs. the best team in the country.  Logan Thomas gets handled and the Tide’s march to 3 straight starts with a mashing.

Kentucky -4.5 vs. W. Kentucky (Nashville, TN) 7pm ESPNNews

The Hilltoppers are my pick to bust the BCS and it will start with a win vs. the big and bad SEC.  I know Kentucky football isn’t really SEC football, but they try.  Bobby Petrino is back coaching and he is working for a major job again and he may have it after this year.

#5 Georgia -1.5 at #8 Clemson 8pm ABC

Aaron Murray is back for his senior year and he has the Bulldogs thinking national title, but I think Tajh Boyd has his Tigers thinking the same thing.  This will be the game of the week and I think that the Tigers will finally give the ACC something to cheer for this weekend.  The Georgia D is a bit too fresh to handle this Clemson offense out of the gate and I look for a comfortable Clemson win.  Betting the spread and the team.

#12 LSU -4.5 vs. #20 TCU (Arlington, TX) 9pm ESPNlsu

The Horned Frogs didn’t show up in the BIG12 like they were expected too and the are hoping for a better season this year.  The LSU Tigers are behind the Tide and the Aggies in the SEC West now, but will be gunning and contending for the top spot early.  LSU had 8 defensive players drafted to the NFL, but John Chavis’ unit is retooled and ready to handle their business.

#19 Boise State at Washington -3 10pm FOX

Off the blue turf and in the loudest stadium in football is no way to start the season if you are Boise State.  They take the loss and they drop out of the top 25.

Sunday

Ohio at #9 Louisville -20.5 3:30pm ESPN

The Cardinals are a legit BCS contender, but a 20 point spread to start the season to a tough Ohio team might be too much.  Frank Solich’s team is good and they will give Bridgewater and the Cardinals fits.  The Bobcats keep it close until the 4th and then talent pulls away.

Monday

#11 FSU -10.5 at Pittsburgh 8pm ESPNfsu

Pitt gets its first taste of ACC football when the Seminoles come to town on Monday night.  The Panthers are going to give it a go, but with a busted running game, a too young O-Line and a QB that hasn’t played a live down in nearly 3 years they are in trouble.  FSU wins big.
